I attended the lane six program for two years before getting a spot on BATs. I was 8 years old and could finally compete! My first swim meet had arrived and I couldn't have been more nervous. Days before the meet I had to talk to my uncle, who was an ex-competitive swimmer, on the phone for encouragement. After warm-ups, I was sitting on the bleachers wrapped up in my towel shivering. I anxiously watched the events go by until the first heat of the 50 freestyle was ready to line up. Ev walked over to me and said, “I’ve been waiting two years to see you swim in a meet and now it’s time.” I don’t remember how I did in that race, most likely poorly. My performance was beside the fact, and that’s something Ev knew. I wish I could’ve told him how much I cherished that moment before he passed, I don’t know if he would’ve remembered it, but what he said to me that day was the only thing that calmed my nerves.
Ev always had a great energy around him, the way he spoke turned everyone’s mood around, you couldn’t keep a smile off your face when talking with him. He had a very positive outlook on life, which touched everyone on the team. Ev was a wonderful coach and mentor, I couldn’t have asked for someone more charismatic to kickstart my competitive swimming career.

Rest easy Coach Ev, you will always be loved and missed.

Few people impact ones life as this man did mine. We met in Puerto Rico and he was my baseball Coach. He served his country & its youth in perpetuity.
