Obituary for Hazel Joyce Richards (Brooks)

Hazel Joyce (Brooks) Richards, 97, of Nashua, died on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at the Hunt Community in Nashua. She was born on February 5, 1922 in Nashua, daughter of William J. and Mary (Legg) Brooks.

She was the wife of the late Howard C. Richards, Jr., who died in 2014. They were married on June 4, 1943.

Hazel was a 1939 graduate of Nashua High. She traveled to Panama in June 1943 to marry Howard and then was employed as a personnel clerk for U.S. Army at Quarry Heights, Canal Zone.

In the Canal Zone she was extensively involved in the mission work of the Union Church performed within the Republic of Panama. She and Howard returned to NH from the Canal Zone upon his retirement in 1970. She was a member of The First Church, UCC in Nashua and had received The Kathryn Brigham Service to First Church Award in 1999. She was also a member of the Nashua Women’s Club, the Photographic Society of America and past president of the Nashua Camera Club.

In her free time, she enjoyed sewing as well as photography, for which she won many awards. She and Howard traveled throughout the US and Canada, creating narrated slide shows presented at various venues throughout New England.

She is survived by her four sons and three daughters-in-law; Bruce E. Richards and wife Dorothy of Manchester, Paul W. Richards and wife Barbara of Denison, TX, Mark W. Richards of Nashua, and Hugh M. Richards and wife JoAnn of Neenah, WI, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.

SERVICES: There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at The First Church, UCC (Congregational) at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 9, 2019. Interment will immediately follow after the service at Last Rest Cemetery in Merrimack. Family and friends are invited to attend. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Hunt Community Scholarship Fund, 10 Allds St, Nashua, NH 03060 or Scholarship Fund at The First Church, One Concord St., Nashua, NH 03064.
