Mary Skikos Doolittle, 88, of Nashua, NH, passed away on Monday, March 18 at Southern NH Medical Center after a period of declining health. She was a beloved wife, mother, Oma, and sister; her spunk and giving spirit will be greatly missed.
Born in Ogden, Utah on September 5, 1930 to the late James and Florence (Caldwell) Skikos, Mary was the eldest of eight siblings (Andrew, Barbara, George, Demetri, Ann, Peter and Philip). She was educated at St. Mary of the Wasatch High School and soon after went to work at Hill Air Force Base, where she was the only female crew chief on the refurbishment assembly line for the B-26 airplane. She also pitched for their intramural softball team. At Hill, Mary met Chester (Wally) Doolittle; the two fell in love and were married in January of 1953. Mary and Wally’s life together took them to many amazing places: Key West, FL; Alameda, California; Oak Harbor, WA; Luquillo, Puerto Rico; VA Beach, Virginia; among others. Along the way they raised five children. They settled in Nashua in 1966, when Wally came to work at Sanders Associates. Mary also worked for a time as a realtor and realtor-broker in the Nashua area.
Mary’s loving focus was her home and family; she ran the household, cooked meals, sewed clothes and costumes, tended the flower garden and instilled in her children a love of reading. She never missed a birthday or holiday; her sweetly written birthday and Christmas cards are cherished.
Mary was a woman of faith, and loved the Blessed Mother and her Son. She prayed the Rosary regularly, and was an active volunteer in the religious communities where she lived; especially Our Lady of the Cedars where she enjoyed singing during liturgies, and assisted with yard sales and the Mahrajan. She served on the parish council and as the Christian Education Coordinator for Immaculate Conception Church; and on the school board for Nashua Catholic Regional Schools. She taught religious education to countless second graders in NH and WA states.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Wally, brother George, and son-in-law Denis O’Keefe. Mary is survived by her children: Jerry Doolittle (wife Peggy); Terri O’Keefe, James Doolittle (wife Susan); Jeffrey Doolittle (fiancée Stephanie); and Christina Straight (husband Stan); 12 grandchildren: Heather (husband Bill) Reardon, David O’Keefe, Kevin (wife Karolina) Doolittle, Jared Doolittle (wife Dee), Michael O’Keefe (wife Danielle); Matthew Doolittle (fiancée Keri Ann), Caitlyn and Corina Doolittle; Hannah, Ana, Ian and Lucas Straight; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Please join her family at a funeral service to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Our Lady of the Cedars Church, 140 Mitchell St., Manchester NH. Visiting hours will not be held. Burial will take place at a later date at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Our Lady of the Cedars Church, 140 Mitchell St., Manchester, NH 03103.
